It’s November 2 – tomorrow the United States Constitution will be challenged in a way it has not been since the Civil War…and I have lost faith in those who have sworn to uphold it.
Honestly, I am overwhelmed – by the ridiculous interpretations of the office of the POTUS being shared with us by Trump’s followers; by the Senate Majority Leader’s choices over the last 12 years.
TWELVE YEARS. Let it sink in…
For whole 12 years, Mitch McConnell has rewritten agreed upon protocols, ignored long-standing traditions and lied to the American people and his colleagues to suit his political objectives. Who he is in life, I do not know – but he presents as a racist and a thief. I don’t know if the Democrats are stupid or naive, but either way, they have been outsmarted so many times, they appear weak/soft.
Many of my fellow citizens appear callous and indifferent to hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones, in part, by refusing to wear masks, in alignment with public policy in many states, counties, and cities – because they believe they are “free to make their own choices”. Someone has convinced them that committing to a simple action for the good of the many tramples on their individual rights. They have been encouraged, preached to, and challenged to remain closed off from the modern understanding of the words: Militia, Freedom and Indivisible – and let’s throw Justice in there for good measure. They draw false equivalencies to abortion and child endangerment, to evil and feminism, to dream and crime. Somehow the reality of the white man stealing this land from Native Americans, slaughtering their people and dissolving their culture has been replaced with an absurd faith in an innate caucasian superiority – while white power is mistakenly equated to “right”, “fair” and “moral”.
When I sit quietly and sift through the images that run through my mind of the last several years, it may as well be 1968. (Actually, no…never mind. 1968 was horrible, but it was not nearly as widespread as it is now. Or as a friend said to me, “The whole world is holding its breath to see which way the US will go.)
Scared caucasian people screaming about their savior and their land and their home and their rights – while defending the murder of “others” who do not look like them and have done nothing to them. They are retelling stories that were never true – not ever. Stories about the inferiority of black skin, brown values, black minds, brown dreams, red principles, black anger, red intelligence…
I know I am not alone…I have many friends and loved ones, elected officials and champions of equality on the side of Democracy, what I would call my side.
And…I’m so tired of wringing my hands. I don’t want to argue over behavior and opinion. I want to discuss facts and policy.
Are we not here because we (Americans in total) did not do what we should have done when we should have done it? It’s as if the Republicans thought he would simmer down – and frankly, Democrats were sadly amused by Trump’s lack of knowledge, understanding or respect for the Constitution or American history overall. Before we knew it, his children had taken on jobs in the administration they, too, were not suited or prepared for – and the entire Trump family was making money off of the election.
Back to Mitch…
McConnell is not an idiot…he’s focused to a fault, and used our preoccupation with the sideshow in the White House to do what he’s always wanted to do…
- Stack the Courts
- Destroy all of Obama’s contributions to the long-term health of our society and planet
- Obliterate as much “liberal’ legislation as he could get his hands on
- Ignore the majority and progressive to honor the likes of George Wallace and David Duke.
I suspect if it were truly treason, the ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center would already be in court.
Therefore, it must be the consequences of people so preoccupied with self (or survival) that we just waited for someone else to step in and stop him/them. I don’t think any civilized, thinking American believed it would come to this.
What say you?
